Zeta

Subtleties I never knew
I'll never fully understand

Years spent, aching for
A word, a sigh, something true

Endlessly grasping for what's gone
Aching for what's been lost so long

To feel something more than this
Emptiness of desperation

walking down a gentle hill on rogers ave
a boy gets out of a black cab
his mom carries a tambourine in a paper bag
because on this block there are churches

store fronts with handmade signs,
monumental buildings that look new,
minimal design, a matte sliver cross on a teal background
& signs that ask
"have you really prayed today?"
or remind you
"jesus saves"

but then we are there
at the food sermon
and a family cooks in an open kitchen
for the entire population
big bins of kale, red beans,
industrial rice cookers, and lamb shanks.
but it is not just food
they say,
"we believe in you!"
